The adventures of Gilly the rescue horse and his side kick and partner in crime, Pokey the donkey.

Winter please go away....

The weather warmed up some a few days ago, it rained and a lot of the snow melted. The yesterday the temperature started to drop, it started snowing a fine wet snow about 11:00 am and continued on into the night. We got about 6 inches of the white stuff....again! It's also very cold!!!

Here is Gilly nibbling on some hay, click to enlarge, he has icicles in his tail and his jaw whiskers. There are also some hanging off his ears and sides. Will he go in the barn, no; I guess he isn't cold....boy, looking at him sure makes me cold!

The boys saw something that spooked them, I looked up the hill but couldn't see what it was. Pokey eventually trotted over to Gilly to stand next to him, he feels safer when he is by his big buddy. This was taken about 3:30 in the afternoon, the sun has already started to go over the hill and it was 17 degrees, this was the warmest it had been all day. Now at 9:10 pm it's -1 and still going down!

Pokey is still concerned about what it up on the hill. Well, yes I do agree that the snow is beautiful but......I have seen about enough of it's beauty for one year. I would love to see some dead brown grass or even some....dare I say it??? MUD! At least that would mean it was a little warmer.

The weather forecast is calling for another inch of snow tomorrow and maybe more on Sunday! ugh.
I am counting down the days till spring.....it can't get here soon enough!!!

Hoof print in snow

We got snow last night; I thought we were only getting flurries but the flurries turned into about 2 inches of snow. Yes, it's pretty but.....seems like just yesterday I was shoveling snow off the patio! Wow the summer went fast, fast, fast!!!

Anyway, when I went to feed the boys, Gilly came into the barn while I was getting their oats. I feed them outside so he turned and went back out and to the feeder by the gate. When I came back to the barn to fill up the water bucket and get hay, here is what I saw laying on the barn floor.
I picked it up and carried it to the yard by the patio so I could get my camera and take a picture. This is a cast of one of his hind feet, I can tell because they are have a more pointed toe than the front feet. I was looking at the long marks the bars of his hoof left. When he first started getting the barefoot trim almost 4 years ago he hardly had any bars but not look at them! Almost to the end of the frog! (click on picture to enlarge) There is also a large snow flake on the left side too!
Since it's cold outside and I am a wimp about the cold today I am staying inside and addressing my Christmas cards and am going to watch a movie, "Tombstone". Lots of horses in there to watch and Sam Elliott too (sigh) one of my favorite cowboys....my number one favorite is Tom Selleck (bigger sigh) and I have a lot of his  movies too. So I'll be in front of the TV all day! LOL
My two favorite cowboys!!!

Power outage and snow

Woke up Saturday morning to a very dark house. The power was off!!! There was about 8 inches of heavy wet snow on the ground and power lines down, trees down, oh, what fun.
We have a big generator so we were OK and two space heaters in the house that run without electric. Mike just had to go to the building to power up the generator.

The first picture was taken yesterday afternoon, beautiful blue skies and some sunshine that the boys had to nap in the sun. Still cold out though but beautiful!
The one above was taken this afternoon when it started to snow again. When I snapped this one the snow looked like huge down feathers floating down out of the sky. Then it started raining! UGH! We are supposed to have freezing rain then more snow up to 8 more inches....enough already!

This was taken on Saturday, the trees were coated with ice and then snow. Click on the picture above to see the trees that are bent over and look like willow trees. I don't know how many tress came down.

The solar candles hanging on the hooks were blown sideways by the wind then froze that way. As the snow piled up. The wind was blowing from behind the house, which was strange; it usually comes down the creek.

As the day warmed up a bit the snow started sliding off the steel roof, hitting the second roof with a thud! (this was taken from our bedroom window.)

Above is my road cleaning crew of one. Mike and his tractor and blade; he hasn't been out on the tractor for awhile so he was having fun cleaning the driveway and the road in front of the house and buildings.
The power was off for 35 hours, I hope that this storm won't take down any power lines.
Oh, yes, the rug is finished but I have to steam it and bind it, then I will post the finished work.

Here comes MORE snow!

It started snowing again today, the BIG storm is coming! We are supposed to get 6 to 8 inches of snow but how knows how much we will get. When I get up tomorrow and look out then I'll know but it's supposed to snow until Friday evening. Here are the boys after it had been snowing about two hours this afternoon.

Gilly looks like a snow covered Yak!!!

He really looks funny here! Yawning and nodding his head. This was about feeding time so they were standing guard so they could see in the sliding glass door; the look of the first picture is what you see if you look out about the time they think they need fed! I usually don't feed until 4 or 5 in the evening but they start their watch about 3 or 3:30.

Cold winter day

Picture of the boys altered by photo program, dot stippling...interesting. Big storm is supposed to hit here tonight, calling for 4 to 8 more inches of snow! Hope it's wrong, we will see in the morning light. (be sure to click on this one to enlarge so you can see the details)

and still... it snows........

Lucy this morning in our driveway, as the snow falls down on her. She seems to love the snow, will curl up and sleep in it and be completely covered! She does have a really nice dog house to sleep in, double walls and floor with insulation in-between with lots of cedar chips for a bed. She just likes to be out in the snow; not me!

This is looking up the creek to our neighbors, snow, snow and more snow!

Looking down the creek to the barn and out buildings. This is the way it has looked all day, with the snow only stopping for about an hour before it started up again. The weather forecast for the last two days has said 1 to 2 inches of snow......I think they miscalculated that one!!! We have 6 or 7 inches maybe more!!! It is pretty though, all stuck to the trees and fences.

"Will you stop taking pictures!!! Lets go do something!" Whinny dog!!! She always gives me this look when I lag to far behind, she wants to run a play. I kick snow up in the air and she will jump at it, silly dog! Another favorite thing for her to do is start up in the yard, our yard in very sloping to the road, on her back and wiggle her way down through the snow in the yard, almost to the road. Looks like a saucer sled went through the snow.....no, just Lucy on her back, funny dog!

(click on pictures to make them larger) I see two hungry boys waiting for me! They are always hungry, or so they say. Pokey had just let out a very loud "HEEEEE-HAAAWW" right before I snapped this picture; as he has gotten older his voice has become quite large for one so small.

I'm getting closer! Now Gilly is nickering for me to hurry up, he is on his last leg and may just fall over if I don't get there fast!

On the way back to the house, I got this picture, everything looks so dreary! I tried to lighten it up a bit but not much luck. Our house is up on a bit of a rise and I was down in the road so it appears to be at a funny angle. I would have to walk through the creek and up a steep hill to be level with the house. I can see that come spring the house is due for a power washing! Green stuff grows on the vinyl siding down here in the hollow.....uck!

The creek is partly frozen and the water is rushing under some icy overhangs. Oh, that looks COLD! Lucy will walk down into the creek to get a drink of water....akkkk...I just bought her a heated water bucket...she hardly drinks from it; prefers the ice cold water! She is one tuff dog!

Snowflakes on our wood steps! I am amazed at what beautiful things they are; each one a masterpiece in itself!
I leave you with that because it's time to feed the boys again; they have been patiently (or not) waiting since 3:30, it's now 4:15 for their supper. They always hang out at the gate where they can spy on the house for any movement, which when seen they will loudly announce they are starving!!!
I usually feed somewhere between 4 and 5 in the evenings and there have been times when they will come to the back of the house, the fence is only about 20 feet from the kitchen window. When they are back there they are peeping Tom's and any movement they see in the window will result in a lot of noise from them! They are trying to teach me to feed them when they speak.....sorry boys, your feeding schedule is on my time!!!

Monday Snow

I thought this picture was just too darned cute! Pokey's little bristly mane sticking up with snow flakes in the dark part. The boys had come into the barn to get their breakfast covered in snow so I got out the camera and got some pictures.

Can you see me in Gilly's eye? I have purple sweats on, see? LOL The brightness of his hair on his face is coming from the open barn door....making his wet hair look silver.

This picture is blurred but still I find it very interesting. Snow on Gilly's tail hair, taken in macro.

The icy creek with snow falling down leaving a pins and needles look to the picture. The water was rushing by but a leaf is stuck on a rock under the ice overhanging the creek. Wonder what else was lurking under there??

Yes, that's my big feet in my new Mountain Horse boots. They are very warm and because of all the insulation and furry foot bed you don't have to wear heavy socks in them. Great boots and waterproof too....Lisa they are very light weight! I really like them. I hope it warms up some so I can ride in them to see how my feet feel then. (Don't you just love the purple sweats?) LOL

Snowy Sunday

Friday night, late it started snowing some; not much at first but it kept it up all night so in the morning we about 4 inches of snow! Yesterday and today it had been overcast and some interesting clouds out there.

Then the sun came out and boy! Talk about knocking your eyes-out-blue!! WOW! (these photos were taken with my little Canon Power Shot) This is taken from our side door looking up the creek to the neighbors. That's our hay field that the boys have been in lately. The pump jack is fenced off from Pokey-The-Termit's little teeth too. I am sure he would chew the hoses off the tank...and...Gilly would feel obligated to help!

The boys sunning themselves, Gilly had been laying this his head stretched out but just as I got ready to snap the picture he raised his head. Bad Gilly!!!!

Awwww, now for a roll in the snow (he is not as close to the fence as it looks)

Here we go all four in the air! If I had turned the camera to action I could have gotten more of the roll but this one is pretty good!

LOL....really love this one! Looks like he is sitting back on his haunches!
"Ugh...I think I can get back up! Snort!"

"Pssssfff!!!! Pokey I'll bet you can't do that!"

"Yes, I can and you are too fat to roll completely over....I on the other hand can roll over many times! But....I just don't want to today! snort...dumb horse!
I am the ASS and I rule this farm!!!"

Merry Christmas All!

Pokey too!

More Snow and a Two Headed Equine

Pokey says, Hey Lucy what's up?? Come over here and let me bite your neck!
Pokey likes to chew on Lucy and sometimes he gets a little too rough for her liking, but then Gilly will do the same thing to her. She will squeal and snap at their noses but then come right back for more. Funny how animals play!

Pokey was smelling under her chin and Lucy will just stand there while he does. Sometimes she will turn her head sideways and let him smell or chew on her neck. It takes awhile for one of them to get a good bite on her because he has such a thick coat of hair.

Now Gilly is getting into the act and leaning over Pokey to see what's going on. Pokey is still intent on getting a bite of Lucy.

Gilly now has his face right beside Pokey's little face and his neck in entwined with Pokey. Looks like a two headed equine for sure! Lucy is still waiting for them to chew on her neck, come on guys lets play!! (click on the pictures to enlarge them)
We have several inches of snow on the ground and I am wishing it would just go away! I want spring and warmer weather so bad! I did get to ride Gilly last week for about an hour, ahhh, it was wonderful!!!

Ice and Snow

Here are some pictures of our ice and snow when the power was off last week. The orange dot in the trees is a repair man from the electric company working on the downed lines. I would hate to have a job like that, these poor guys worked tired, wet and cold to get the power back on.
A shot looking up at the granary roof with icicles.

Looking from the sunroom at the ice hanging off the roof.

Ice and snow covered the pines but we had no damage to limbs.
