The adventures of Gilly the rescue horse and his side kick and partner in crime, Pokey the donkey.

Great day for a ride........

I had ridden Gilly up past our neighbors when I first started to ride and snapped this picture of their building with the new porch. The little building is where my neighbor works on 4 wheelers and dirt bike, he has a back door for getting them into the building. They recently added this neat porch, awning and decorations. I thought it was neat too that she added horse shoes, in various sizes too! Looks nice doesn't it?

Gilly and I rode on but I didn't get any pictures as we rode. We went past another neighbors, they have cows and Gilly was looking around for them but they weren't to be seen. As we approached the bridge and a Blue Heron flew up and over the bridge, Gilly stopped and watched it, we were back far enough that he didn't spook. We crossed the bridge but Gilly was a little concerned that the bird was somewhere around. I assured him that it flew off and horse wasn't in it's diet so he was safe. As we rode on I thought to myself that as soon as we got to the next electric pole we would turn around and head home. I think Gilly picked up on that thought but a little early because at about 10 feet from the pole he started to turn. I turned him back and went to the pole and had him turn on his haunches, which he did and did it well.

Lucy and Gonzo were with me and another neighbors dogs were barking so I am glad we turned around. Gilly isn't much bothered by the dogs but I didn't want to put my dogs are risk. Gilly was watching the bridge again still concerned about the bird but he was long gone.

When we got closer to home I could hear Pokey calling for Gilly. He was standing at the end of the field waiting for us. As we came closer he started trotting up and down the fence, Gilly pays no attention to him.

As we came closer to the house I heard a tractor coming down the road our way. I turned to see a really big tractor coming with a big round bale trailer behind it. Gilly and I got off the road by our barn and turned to watch it go by. He just watched and as it went by I turned him toward it and we started following it down the road. Gilly just trotted along behind it until it speeded up and got away from us.

I stopped at Kim's and the pictures you are about to see she took with my camera. To get the camera to her I had Gilly sidepass over to her deck railing and handed her the camera. Gilly did just what I ask....good boy!

We had moved sideways up the hill a bit from her deck so she could get some pictures of us. Gilly is getting really good at moving to the side or backward if I ask.

Lucy was across the road barking at something so Gilly had to stop and look. Gonzo had walked up on the deck and was taking a nap in the sun. What a lazy dog, if Kim's door had been open he would have gone into the house and got on the couch to take a nap. Kim's house is his second home, since he stayed with them three years ago when Mike and I had to go to Columbus a lot.

Here we are moving sideways down through the yard.

Kim's husband just came out of the house and sit down on the steps and has a big mug of coffee, Gilly is watching.

Now he is really watching and kept nodding his head as if asking if he could PLEASE have a drink of that yummy coffee? He will drink cold coffee, just straight black....uck! Oh, don't worry he has only had some a few times, I am sure coffee isn't good for him.

Here is a picture of my new stirrups, well, Ok, just the one and the horse hair shoo fly isn't attached to my boot either! Yes, the stirrup is a little larger than the English one's I had but boy is it comfortable! The wide foot bed felt great on my feet, it has put my foot at a little different angle so it will take some getting used to.

Here is a close up, it has a leather rough out piece with Velcro holding it on. It is also padded for more comfort. It made for a really nice ride, my feet are happy!!! :-)

After the ride I let Gilly eat grass where Pokey is now. Well, Pokey had a fit running back and forth along the fence where he could see Gilly and he wanted out to eat too. So I put Gilly back in the field after he had eaten about 10 minutes and got the little whiner out so he could have a snack too.

I do have some Sweet William ground cover growing in this mess but the Bermuda grass has taken over. The boys do a really good job of picking it out. I would like to put some cut sandstones at the sides and fill in with some good dirt and have a space for lettuce, carrots, radishes. this is close to the patio and kitchen. Some day!

This is a hind shot of Gilly when he was out there. Hey, Lisa, now this is one BIG butt, I would say bigger than Atta Bay's!!! LOL Looking at this makes me think of how I used to run and jump on my first horse from behind.........not on your life now!!! I bet all I could manage to do is just run into his butt and fall down.....naa, don't think I wanna try it....anyone else want too? Maybe if I back him up to the front porch?

Smooch or a bite?

I labeled this picture "Donkey bite" but it looks like little ornery Pokey is giving his big buddy Gilly a BIG smooch! Aren't they cute? LOL
He really was biting Gilly's jaw, just after I snapped the picture Gilly turned around and gave his what for!

Nothing much to post about today. Snow is still here, melting somewhat, dirty and ugly looking now. No sunshine, dreary winter type weather. Weather forecast is still calling for snow flurries....seems like winter is dragging on forever!

I am making vegetable soup for supper, that will brighten things up....yum....a hot bowl of vegetable soup on a dreary day! Made with my canned beef, tomatoes, potatoes and onions.... Sounds good, huh?

Guess I'd better get back to hooking too!

Little Pokey is 2 years old today

Here is the birthday boy, Pokey is two years old today!!! I forgot it until this evening so I didn't get him his birthday mush like I fixed Gilly. I will fix it for him tomorrow, he won't know the difference; he'll just be glad he is getting a treat!

Here is baby Pokey with his mom and I think he is a day old. His former owner gave me the pictures. Look at the fuzzy little butt and head! How cute is that? Pokey is marked like his dad, mom is just a gray/brown donkey.

Here is Gilly and Pokey meeting for the first time last year about the middle of April. Look how tiny Pokey looks beside big Gilly. He also had a lot of burs in his fuzzy coat, we did a lot of brushing that day to get a lot of them out.

And a second picture, look at that little tail. Gilly was snuffeling him all over and softly nickering to him. I am sure that Pokey didn't quite know what to think of that big horse, he had never seen one before. LOL he looks like a strange furry dog!!

Now I ask you how cute is this little face and pink spotted nose???

Don't be late for supper!!! Running hard to keep up with Gilly off the hill behind the barn. Click on the picture to really see Pokey and just how high he is jumping. He was really scooting down the hill to get his supper. He didn't know what oats were when I first got him but after he found out, he sure didn't want to miss out.

He didn't know what to think of the fly mask, I had to get him a mini halter. It has long since been destroyed by Gilly. It has velcro on the poll and under the jaw, both of them really tore it up. Gilly pulled it off then Pokey got ahold of it........bye-bye fly mask!!

Ahhhhh, a nice dust bath! He can never resist a spot to roll and cover himself with dirt! I guess it helps keep the flies from biting but it sure doesn't look good on a white donkey! But then he doesn't care, as much as he rolls it must feel really good!
(by the way, this is my neighbors Appaloosa mare, Lacy with Pokey. Lacy thinks that Pokey is her baby.....from behind they do look somewhat alike, don't they?)

Nice Day for a Nap

Pokey says, "Gilly lay down and take a snooze like I am, it's so nice and warm out here today! Ahhhh!"
Gilly says, "I have to stand guard in case something comes along to bother us. I am watching!"

Gilly says, "Well, OK, maybe there isn't anything sneaking around today. I'll let Lucy watch out for us! Let me get turned around here."

Pokey says, "I knew I could talk you into a nap, heeheehaw!"
Gilly says, "Opps, I came down a little harder than planned, blew my bangs up in the air!"

Pokey says, "Gee, Gilly you made the ground shake!"
Gilly says, "Sorry, I slipped....wait till I get my butt settled....ahhhhh, almost there!"

Gilly says, "Ahhh, Pokey you are right. This is a good day for a nap......I can hardly keep my eyes open."
Pokey says, "Shhhhh, can't you see I'm asleep?"

Gilly, "ZZZZZZZZZZZ snorkkk...."
Pokey, "Boy, is he loud!!! A donkey can't get much sleep with him snoring like that, snort!"

OK, haveing a little fun with pictures! The last picture Gilly went to sleep so quickly and was sleeping so soundly that he was twitching all over. It looked kind of scary if you didn't know horses did that, his ears, jaw muscles and eyes were twitching a lot but he was in a very deep sleep. Since horses need to lay down to get their really good sleep that's what he was doing for about 20 minutes. Pokey was flopping back and forth between being up and down. (These pictures were taken from and upstairs window looking down on them)

Later on in the day I got Gilly out for a ride. We just rode in front of the house, it's a good long stretch from one end of the proberty to the other. Had to because of Pokey, he was loose in the field. Gilly and I worked on small things, leg yeilds, side passes, following my body in a turn, around things in the hay field, trees in the yard. Pokey finally tired of running the fence line and would just watch; finally I took Gilly out of his sight, he heehawed a few times but didn't seem to look for him. Pokey got a lesson too! Gilly and I rode a little farther up the road and onto the gravel part of the road, Gilly doesn't like gravel but.......he learned that his feet are now really hard and it didn't bother him; we even trotted on the gravel!!! BIG break through for him. Next time we will try the creek crossing that he used to have such a fit over.
Sorry no pictures of the ride, just the napping boys!

Pokey Faints

Pokey just got off the phone with his stock broker and accountant and in light of the economy... he fainted dead away! He is worried that with his finances he just won't be able to eat as well as he thought he would this year, prices of hay, corn and oats are going up and his portfolio is going down!!! Poor little guy, I had to throw some cold water on him to revive him!

Not to worry, I won't let him read the paper, talk to his broker or accountant any more!!

Tagged...6th photo from 6th picture folder...

Angie tagged me with the instructions to take the 6th photo from my 6th folder on my computer and the post and blog about it. Well of course it would be a picture of Gilly, I have hundreds of pictures of him on my computer....I mean after all what else is there to take pictures of????
This picture was taken in January before he had his feet trimmed, the day I got kicked, 8 weeks ago. Snow on the ground then today it's in the mid 50's this morning and hopefully it will get warmer as the day goes on but it looks like it could rain too so I guess no riding today!
OK, now on to business, I have to tag 6 other people to play the tagged game! Lets see now....

Heart of a Cowgirl
Black Feather Farm
Jesse's Desert Rose
Art by Gail Ragsdale
Art of Scotland
A Cowgirl's Grace

Now I have to run over to this great sites to tell them that they have been tagged to play or not. If you don't want to that's OK, but we would love to see your photos! :-)
Let's go!!!

Action Sunday

Run, Gilly run!! Love how his tail looks in this one, he's flying and having fun! (these are shots from fall, too cold and windy to be outside today....I'm a weiner! LOL)

All four feet off the ground, good shot, love my camera with the action setting.

Whoa! Now that is a stop! Look at that tail over his back, so glad I wasn't riding that one.

Little Pokey trying his best to keep up with big Gilly (click on these pictures to see them close up)

Pokey says, OK, I give up......not running anymore...pant, pant, can't take anymore. Gilly and Lacy are still flying around having a great time!

Pokey says I'm done, stick a fork in me!!! Lacy, ever the bossy one is after Gilly again; just before he takes off running. He has gotten smarter and really tried to avoid her when she is in her "I'm the boss" mood.
Lacy does now have a new companion to try and boss around, we went and got the pony, "Princess" on Friday. Princess is just the temporary name, Kim will change it when she decides on a name......so far she has picked out 4 but isn't happy with them. I will post pictures of her tomorrow.

Pokey Wants His SUPPER!!!!!

I just filmed this as I was going to the barn to feed. I will have to try it again because I want to get a close up of Pokey making his noise! He is that little white speck down by the barn! Sorry I couldn't get any closer, I couldn't get the little bugger to do it again when I was standing by him with the camera, kids!!! He is hysterical when he does this!
That's Gonzo walking around in the snow.

Hoof Trim and Trip to Emergency Room.....

What started out as a fun day for the horses on Tuesday turned into something I sure didn't expect!
Took Gilly and Pokey to Kim's to play in the snow with Lacy until time for their hooves to be trimmed. This is something we do every 6 weeks; the hoof trim and play time for the critters. Lacy was really wound up and Kim thought she could keep her out from under the back shed while I brought Pokey and Gilly in to be turned loose. Not a good idea, as it turned out. Kim tried to keep Lacy back but she bolted under the shed roof and headed straight for Gilly. For some reason she likes to beat him up if she can, well he was having none of that and kicked back as she tried to bite him. Then he bolted forward and out into the pasture; in his hast to get away from trouble he smashed me up against a wooden shelf. It spun me around, so my chest was against the shelf and then Lacy decided to kick at Gilly. She missed him and caught me square in the back and ribs! I had a very heavily padded coat on so that absorbed some of the force of the kick and she was pretty close to me, thank goodness. Boy, oh, boy did that ever hurt!!!! I didn't hear anything snap so I figured I didn't have any broken bones. I figured I would be OK but sure was sore.

As you can see from some of the pictures Gilly is trying his best to stay out of Lacy's reach. She chased him around the field, trying to get Pokey separated from Gilly; Pokey wasn't having any of that. He always managed to slip around her and come back to Gilly.
Gilly is still running from the mean mare and Pokey is just standing with his eyes shut, wondering what all the fuss is about!
Gilly strutting his stuff with Pokey in tow. Look at how flexible Gilly's tail is.
More of Gilly showing off. He loves to run and play on flat land, since our field is very hilly when he comes down to Kim's he loves to run and run.

Pokey is getting his little hooves trimmed and isn't to sure that he likes it; but he did very well this time and stood good for Mike to trim him. As long as I rubbed his neck and ears he seemed pretty contented. (behind me is the wooden shelf I was smashed against.)
Big Gilly is getting his feet trimmed and he was good too. His feet have come a long way since we first started the "barefoot" trim. He has beautiful big strong feet now!
A little advertising for Mike...............
Taking the boys home. This was about noon and the stiffness and aching in my ribs was getting worse. Still I thought I could tough it out.
About 4:30 I called my daughter at work and told her what had happened and she said I had better to and have my chest X-rayed. On thinking about it I decided it was a good idea because if the pain got really bad it could be a long night.
When Mike came home we got into the truck and headed to the emergency room. I had quite a few X-rays which showed no breaks or cracks in any bones, thank goodness. Then I got a pain shot, felt like a swarm of bees stung my butt!!! OUCH!!! In about 15 minutes I didn't much care about anything but going home. Stopped by a pharmacy to fill a perscription for pain medicine.
Mike has been feeding Pokey and Gilly in the morning for me, it takes me awhile to get limbered up and ready to face the cold we are having. Cleaning up the barn takes some doing, my ribs, back and chest are really sore so it's hard to lift my right arm to do much. I figure if I keep working at it I will work through the soreness; but just wish it wasn't in the teens and windy! Makes for a hurried job at the barn! Gilly and Pokey don't seem to mind the cold, they eat their hay and venture outside for awhile before it's time for supper. Lucy has been sleeping in the snow!!! She has an insulated dog house to sleep in but doesn't go in it much.........she must have one heck of a good heavy coat of hair!
